There is just one week remaining for the NYS Legislature to pass important legislation on issues that will have significant impacts for the environment and our voting rights. Among the bills they are considering, critical ones include:

Help Keep ICE Out of the Polls
In the final days of the State’s Legislative session, a super important voter protection bill has just been introduced that would effectively keep ICE out of the polls in NY (Assembly bill A11530). It’s the same as this model bill from the Brennan Center: State Accountability for Federal Interference at Polling Places (https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/policy-solutions/model-bill-state-accountability-federal-interference-polling-places).
This bill ensures penalties for the unlawful presence of armed federal personnel at polling places, prohibits intimidation of voters and election workers, and prevents misuse of official authority to influence election outcomes. It would also empower voters, election officials, and the state attorney general to act quickly to stop violations.
Let’s help get this critical bill passed and onto the Governor’s desk within the next 4 days! Please call these Legislative Leaders and voice your enthusiastic support for its passage (aka the Brennan Bill, A11530) and just leave a voice message if you don’t get a staffer.

Your support is also urgently needed to help pass three more critical election protection bills before the State Legislature adjourns this week. These bills are practical, common-sense protections that would help ensure every eligible New Yorker can vote safely, freely, and without intimidation.
Poll Site Emergency Extender (S4602A /A5846A): This bill requires polling hours to be extended when voting is disrupted for more than 15 minutes due to bomb threats, emergencies, equipment failures, or other disruptions.
Voter Challenge Protections (S3233A /A6354): This bill modernizes outdated voter challenge laws that can be misused to intimidate eligible voters and create chaos at polling locations.
The Voting Integrity and Verification Act of NY (VIVA NY) (S7116 /A6287): This bill protects the election process from vote count manipulation by providing that each voter is entitled to the use of an individual, voter verifiable paper ballot of the voter’s vote, and the opportunity to mark it.

PFAS and Data Center bills need support and votes in the NYS Legislature
There is just one week remaining for the NYS Legislature to pass important legislation on issues that will have significant impacts for the environment.
Time is of the essence so please call Assembly Speaker Heastie and tell him to bring these two critical bills to a vote, and that you support their passing: (1) the PFAS Discharge Disclosure Act and (2) Data Center Moratorium.
Both of the bills are sponsored by Assemblywoman Anne Kelles who represents the Ithaca/Cortland region.
The PFAS Discharge Disclosure Act (S4574B/A5832B) amends the environmental conservation law to identify the sources of a class of pollutants known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS) in the waters of the state through the creation of a monitoring protocol for certain industrial dischargers and for Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs).This bill is important since Micron is coming to NY and making computer chips requires hundreds of PFAS “forever chemicals”1 – with a potentially significant impact on the environment if not addressed responsibly. The bill has already passed the senate sponsored by Senator May but a vote is needed in the Assembly. For additional information see talking points.
The Data Center Moratorium Bill (S9144A/A10141A) imposes a moratorium on the issuance of permits for new data centers; requires the public service commission to issue an order or orders to minimize the impact of new data centers on electricity and gas rates for residential, commercial, and industrial users; clarifies that certain provisions are applicable to the Long Island power authority. The Senate version, sponsored by Senator Krueger has not yet passed as well. The Albany Times Union has a recent editorial viewpoint on this bill.
